Nothing compares to the love and devotion of mothers, so a special day set aside to honor them is well-deserved. Most people don’t know the story behind Mother’s Day; it has a rich history that spans centuries and continents.

A Brief History of Mother’s Day

The earliest recorded history of Mother’s Day dates back to the ancient Greek celebration of Rhea, who was considered the mother of many deities according to Greek mythology. Ancient Romans created their own celebration in the form of a spring festival than honored Cybele, the mother goddess; this occurred around 250 years B.C. In the 1600s, England observed a holiday called Mothering Sunday, which took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

A prayer service was performed to honor the Virgin Mary, and flowers or other gifts were given to maternal family members by children. Servants were often given the day off, so they could visit their own mothers. A woman named Anna Jarvis is credited for founding Mother’s Day in the U.S. Despite the fact that she never married or had children, she is often called the Mother of Mother’s Day. Present day observance of Mother’s Day occurs in 46 countries, although they do not all celebrate it on the same day.
